From zero to adventurer in four steps

The Hidden Grotto is a text game — you type what you do, and the world answers. No graphics card required.

Connect. Point any MUD client at telnet world.hiddengrotto.org 4000. New to MUDs? Download Grotto Client (Windows / macOS / Linux) — it has aliases, triggers, and hotkeys built in.

Create your character. Choose a name, then pick a race and class. Your race decides your alignment (Light or Dark) and which classes you may take.

Learn to move and fight. Walk with n s e w u d, look around, kill a creature, get loot, wear gear, and cast spells.

Ask for help. Type help any time, read the news, and talk to other players — this world rewards roleplay and rewards the curious.

In The Hidden Grotto you are not yourself; you are your character. A few simple expectations keep the realm worth returning to:

Roleplay is encouraged — stay in character when you can.
Treat other players with respect; no harassment.
